The best electric toothbrush overall
Not only do SURI toothbrushes look great, but their performance is also top-tier. We love the recently launched SURI 2.0 most of all, hence why it's grabbed top spot.
The best affordable electric toothbrush
For the best bang for your buck, the Oral-B iO2 is an exceptional performer with an affordable price tag.
The best premium electric toothbrush
The Philips Sonicare Diamondclean 9900 Prestige may have a very hefty price tag, but multiple cleaning modes and easy-to-use app more than justify it.

After the huge success of the original SURI, we were over the moon to hear a new and improved version was on the way. Unlike many other brands, SURI managed to keep everything we loved about the original whilst upgrading the bits that needed it – which is exactly the way it should be, in our opinion.
The key improvements include a redesigned travel case (now with a battery‑powered UV‑C light), a sleek charging stand and a brand new pressure sensor that buzzes if you brush too hard. It also looks absolutely gorgeous, and with the five original colourways still available, there’s one to suit every taste.
Even with all the upgrades, the toothbrush keeps its gentle 33,000 BPM motor and impressive battery life of around a month per charge. The recyclable brush head also works with the original SURI, which adds to the brand's sustainability ethos.
Our only tiny gripe was that the brush cap doesn’t fit in the travel case when attached, which means you have to choose between them when travelling. However, aside from that, it’s pretty much near-perfect.

At the other end of the price scale – although not the quality scale, if we're talking core functionality – is the affordable Oral-B iO2. This has a very long charging time and no 'smart' functionality to speak of, but ask yourself… do you really care?
In terms of design, the iO2 is sleek and lightweight, with a matte-finish handle that’s easy to hold. It has a single button for power and mode switching and offers three brushing modes – Super-Sensitive, Gentle and Daily Clean. As most budget toothbrushes only have one to two, this was a nice surprise.
Performance-wise, the iO2 delivers a thorough clean, with our reviewer finding the Daily Clean mode being most effective for everyday use. Battery life is also impressive, lasting 5–6 weeks on a full charge, but as mentioned, minor drawbacks include a long 24-hour charging time and a small, sometimes hard-to-see pressure indicator light.

The Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige is easily Philips’ most advanced electric toothbrush yet, and we think it feels like brushing in the future. It’s packed with SenseIQ technology, which personalises your brushing experience by sensing pressure, motion and coverage up to 100 times per second. Basically, if you’re pressing too hard or missing spots, it automatically adapts so you don’t have to fiddle with settings every time.
It pairs with the Philips Sonicare app, which offers real-time guidance and AI-powered recommendations. If we're being honest, most people won’t use the app past the first week, but it’s a nice bonus.
The 9900 Prestige is also a seriously premium-looking device, with a sleek design that resists gunk and even comes with a luxury leather travel case. The new all-in-one brush head promises up to 20x more plaque removal and 100% fewer stains in just two days versus a manual toothbrush. Sure, it’s pricey, but compared to cheaper brushes, it’s absolutely worth the splurge.

Alright, let’s get this out of the way – the Oral-B iO7 launched at a huge £400, though deals are often available, so you can usually grab it for much less. Still not exactly cheap, but compared to the original RRP, it starts to feel like a solid investment for a high-end brush.
That said, this is one of the best rotary toothbrushes you can buy. Thanks to its magnetic iO motor, it combines Oral-B’s classic oscillating-rotating action with subtle vibrations for a thorough, gentle clean. The iO7 comes with multiple brushing programmes, including Daily Clean, Sensitive, Whitening and Gum Care, so you can tailor it to your teeth’s needs.
There are a few extra touches, like the small colour display and AI-assisted brushing guidance, which are clever but not strictly necessary. Even without these, the iO7’s rotary performance is excellent, and features like long battery life and the magnetic charging stand make it a practical, stylish choice.

If you’re looking for the ultimate Sonicare-style brushing experience, the Philips DiamondClean 9000 is hard to beat. It’s a refinement of the already-classy DiamondClean, but with improvements that make it a truly standout sonic toothbrush. The brush delivers the gentle yet powerful sonic vibrations Philips is known for, cleaning teeth thoroughly whilst being easy on gums and enamel.
The Series 9000 keeps things simple where it counts. Its high-end design, slim handle and softly glowing display feel premium, and the multiple brushing programmess, including Deep Clean and Whitening, let you customise your sonic cleaning experience perfectly. Three intensity settings also ensure it works for every mouth, from sensitive to robust.
One of the best features is that the brush divides your mouth into six sections with a gentle buzz to guide you. Between the powerful vibrations, smart timing and premium feel, this is as good as sonic brushing gets.

Dubbed by our reviewer as the 'iPhone of toothbrushes', the Laifen Wave is the best oscillating electric toothbrush you can buy today. An incredibly powerful dual-action electric toothbrush, the Laifen Wave generates 6.1 watts for a 3x increase in brushing efficiency.
With up to 66,000 vibrations per minute and an industry-leading 60° ultra-wide oscillation range, the Laifen Wave offers a deep and professional clean that's hard to beat. It even has Flight Mode and other customisation options in its accompanying app aside from its standard three modes the brush comes with.
The design of the Laifen Wave looks good, and is sleek, lightweight and compact. The battery life is incredibly impressive as it fully charges in just over two hours for 30 days worth of use. Whilst it doesn't come with a pressure indicator or any travel or storage accessories, we couldn't fault its power, design and settings, so the Laifen Wave gets top points from us.

Toothbrushes aren’t exactly the most sustainable items, especially if you’re sticking with a manual brush. Even electric models create waste with regular head replacements, but the SURI Sustainable Sonic Toothbrush is designed to tackle these issues head on. The new generation SURI has claimed the top spot in this guide, but that doesn't mean the original doesn't deserve some attention too.
The brush heads are made from plant-based corn starch, with bristles crafted from bio-based castor oil to cut down reliance on petroleum plastics. The aluminium brush body is long-lasting, fully recyclable, and SURI even offers free brush head recycling in the UK and US.
On top of being eco-friendly, it doesn’t skimp on performance. With sonic vibrations, a UV cleaning case and two cleaning modes, it’s a highly effective brush. Stylish, convenient and environmentally conscious, the SURI 1.0 proves that a top-performing sonic brush can also be kind to the planet.

A newer brand on the market, Oclean launched in 2017 and has since wowed with its Oclean X Ultra S. An AI-powered electric toothbrush, the Oclean X Ultra S has sensors that monitor your cleaning progress and tracks everything you need to know about your clean, including timing, settings, pressure and more.
The Oclean X Ultra S has multiple cleaning cycles to play with, and it even comes with different brush heads to suit your mouth and gums. In our Oclean X Ultra S review, we did find that it occasionally randomly selects cycle, but it's very intuitive and even speaks to you if you're brushing too fast.
Aside from its AI, the Oclean X Ultra S has a nice design with a touchscreen that allows you to flick through modes and check your stats. It offers a good clean and comes with handy accessories like a travel case, charging stand and wall mount, so it's definitely style and substance in one.

The Soocas NEOS II combines a powerful sonic toothbrush with a built-in water flosser, letting you brush and floss in one smooth motion. There are two modes – Deep Clean (2 minutes brushing and 1 minute flossing) and Quick Floss, as well as three intensity levels so you can chose in the perfect pressure.
The flossing system uses advanced diaphragm technology to push water at up to 124.3 PSI through a super fine 0.6 mm jet, which helps it reach tricky spots between teeth and along the gumline.
The built-in 50 ml tank isn’t huge, but we found it to just be enough for a quick flossing cycle. It can also last almost 30 days on a single charge, and it uses a magnetic charger that snaps neatly onto the back of the handle.
In terms of cleaning, brushing and flossing simultaneously feels a little odd at first, but the result is noticeably cleaner teeth. Drawbacks include a bulky design and the fact the water tank runs out relatively quickly, but it's still an impressive 2-in-1 option.
How to choose the best electric toothbrush
Choosing the best electric toothbrush isn’t just about picking the flashiest model on the shelf – it’s about finding one that works for your mouth, lifestyle and budget.
Start by looking at the brushing technology. Sonic brushes, like Philips Sonicare, use high-frequency vibrations to clean gently but effectively, whilst rotating and oscillating brushes spin in circular motions to remove plaque. Both are excellent, and it’s mostly a matter of personal preference and sensitivity.
Next, think about features that matter to you. Some brushes offer multiple cleaning modes along with intensity settings for sensitive teeth. Pressure sensors are handy to prevent over-brushing, and timers ensure you brush for the recommended two minutes. Smart brushes with apps are fun, but you don’t necessarily need them to get a great clean.
Battery life and charging style are another factor. A long-lasting battery is convenient for travel, whilst USB charging is more flexible than a bulky plug-in charger. Finally, don’t forget the replacement brush heads – check how often they need changing, whether they’re easy to source, and if they’re compatible with the toothbrush you choose.
Ultimately, the best electric toothbrush is one you’ll enjoy using every day, that cleans effectively and fits your routine. Comfort and consistent results are far more important than gimmicks or the latest tech – even if we try and convince you otherwise.
How we test the best electric toothbrushes
We’ve spent weeks trialling brushes from Philips and Oral-B, but we’re seeing more and more great options from other brands these days, so it’s worth keeping an open mind beyond the usual names.
Each brush is assessed for cleaning power, comfort, ease of use, battery life and any extra features – including timers, pressure sensors or multiple brushing modes. We pay attention to how the brushes work when used correctly, and of course, comparing them to all the other models we've tried.
Finally, we evaluate design, build quality and practicality. Is it easy to hold? Does it charge conveniently? Are replacement heads readily available? By combining these real-life and measured tests, we can confidently recommend brushes that are effective, comfortable and enjoyable to use every day.

That said, the one rule one of electric toothbrush buying club is never pay full price for an electric toothbrush. The best advice here is to look at our price widgets and see what's on offer during shopping events like Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day.
3. How much do electric toothbrush heads cost?
Replacement brush heads for both Philips and Oral-B are widely available in supermarkets and online, usually priced between £10 and £30. However, we recommend waiting for a deal and consider buying in bulk, as it’s much more cost-effective in the long run.
Whilst many of the brushes on this list are from other brands, quite a few use heads that are compatible with Philips or Oral-B systems. Before you buy, check what type of heads the brush uses, and if it’s a brand where replacement heads are hard to find or expensive, it might not be worth the hassle.
