When Paul Thomas Anderson makes a movie, you sit up and pay attention. When that movie stars Daniel Day-Lewis you immediately accept that you have to watch it as soon as possible. That's as potent a director-actor pairing as you could hope to cook up.
If, though, you've never managed to watch Phantom Thread, their 2017 team-up taking a look at the internal life of a fashion impresario, now's the perfect time – because this masterpiece is about to leave Netflix in the US. The good news is that you've got a couple of weeks before it disappears on 15 January.
Phantom Thread is set in the 1950s in London, centring around Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis), a celebrated dress-maker who works hand-in-hand with his slightly scary sister Cyril (Lesley Manville). When he falls into a tryst with an at-first unassuming young waitress, Alma (Vicky Krieps), their lives start to become more complicated.
However, if you're coming to Phantom Thread hoping to get a fast-paced thriller with plot developments coming every few minutes, you might want to look elsewhere. This is a languorous and extremely subtle movie, one that measures its success in the depths of body language and the glances between its characters, as much as in their dialogue.
If my slightly pretentious tone didn't already make it clear, then, I'll say it outright – Phantom Thread is one of my favourite movies, a film that made a significant impression on me when I saw it in the theater, and which has continued to impress me on rewatches. I think it's on the list of movies that everyone should see, if they have even the remotest tolerance for arthouse fare.
So, it's not ideal for Netflix that it's about to lose it. The best streaming service is the one with the best movies, after all, and Phantom Thread's 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes underlines its quality easily. So, get it on your watchlist ASAP and make sure that you make a mental note to watch it before 15 January. It'd be a real shame to miss out on this stunner of a movie.
