With high-tech material to suit both hot and cool climates, the Aspire Advanced Temperature Control Mattress is unique in its offering. Search online for “mattresses that don’t get too hot” and you’ll come across a wide selection of ‘cooling’ mattresses that claim to regulate your temperature and ensure that the mattress doesn’t get too hot. But with two sides for you to flip between to suit both the hot and cold seasons, this Aspire mattress goes one step further. Keen to see if it could keep me comfortably cool in the warmer months and suitably snug when the chillier weather came, I trialed it in both summer and winter.

I’ve tested a wide range of best mattresses for 2025, including those with two sides of differing tensions such as the Eve Wunderflip mattress. But this Aspire design is the only mattress I’ve tested that offers two temperature-regulating sides.

I set a double version of the Aspire Advanced Temperature Control Mattress in my guest room and slept on it in both the late summer months and also the chillier autumn/winter months. I was keen to see if I noticed a difference in my temperature and comfort and ultimately if this had a positive impact on my sleep quality. Read on for my full review where I rate it on price, design, performance, motion control and edge support, which are all key features that make for a satisfying mattress buy.

ASPIRE ADVANCED TEMPERATURE CONTROL MATTRESS: SET UP

I tried a 4ft 6 double Aspire mattress, which got delivered fully formed and wrapped in plastic packaging. This was quite the relief having tested one too many rolled up bed in a box mattresses that take a while to reach their shape. The delivery team offered to take it up the stairs and lay it on my wooden slatted bed, which was a great help as at 27cm thick, this mattress is bulky.

The first thing I noticed about the design is that there are handles on each side of the mattress. While this may sound like a small detail, when setting up the mattress and also flipping it from side to side when needed, good handles make things so much easier.

I’ve tried a number of very thick mattresses in the past and the lack of good support to move it has been a bugbear of mine, so this is where the Aspire scores top marks in my books. On unravelling the plastic packaging (there’s quite a lot but it can be recycled) I didn’t notice too much off-gassing either, which is that factory smell you can sometimes get with a new mattress. Once I’d dressed the mattress in breathable cotton linen and added a duvet on top I was ready to sleep. So far, so good.

ASPIRE ADVANCED TEMPERATURE CONTROL MATTRESS: DESIGN

Unlike a pure memory foam mattress that can run the risk of making you too hot as you sleep, the Aspire has 1,000 individually nested pockets springs at its core that both enhances breathability and gives you even support from head to toe. This pocket spring construction is also design to reduce motion transfer, which is must if you or your partner are particularly restless at night and don’t want to disturb each other.

But it’s the material included in the mattress on either side that really does the hard work at tackling the challenges of temperature change. The cool side is easily identifiable by its blue writing that says ‘temperature control’ on the surface of the mattress, meanwhile the warmer side has the same written in red.

On the blue cooling surface an innovative fabric infused with carbon fibre strands has been used, which is included for its hyper-conductive cooling properties. There’s also a cashmere wool comfort layer to enhance breathability and comfort. Flip the mattress over and you can make use of the red warming side that uses a fabric designed to absorb moisture to generate heat. This side also has traditional fibre fillings with supportive foam to create that extra bit of cosiness.

ASPIRE ADVANCED TEMPERATURE CONTROL MATTRESS: PERFORMANCE

Never too hot and never too cool

Finding a mattress that offers two sides with high-tech fabrics to suit hot and cooler climes is quite the novelty and my overall experience of it has been positive. I first started sleeping on the Aspire in the late summer months when room temperatures rose to 22 degrees, so I flipped it onto the cooling side first. The surface of the mattress feels soft and tactile and as a result of its smooth surface I think it was noticeably cool underhand. While I was never able to get completely cool at night when we had the odd heatwave, the mattress never made me feel too hot like some memory foam mattresses can. When the seasons changed and I flipped to the warmer side, I really liked having the extra padding and the mattress felt very comfortable.

Great for back sleepers

At 27cm, this mattress may just be a couple of centimetres above the average design, but I think it makes a huge difference to the comfort and overall luxury feel of it. Aspire states that this is a medium-firm mattress and I found it on the firmer side of things, which is a plus if you’re particularly tall or just want a mattress that feels evenly supportive across your body. I sleep on my back and front and interchange between the two and I would say I found it most comfortable while sleeping on my back as the mattress provides good pressure relief. The mattress gave me particularly good support across my hips and neck where it’s needed the most. My partner who tends to sleep on his front noted that he found the cooler side more comfortable to sleep on as it doesn’t feel so plush.

To further assess just how good the pressure relief is here, I used an 8kg weight on top of the cool side of the mattress and used a tape measure to see how much the mattress sank. It measured around 1.5 inches, which is around average for a mattress with good pressure relief - the lower the sinkage measurement, the firmer and more supportive the mattress.

Ideal for sharing and limiting movement

One of the benefits of having so many pocket springs at the core of this mattress is that it limits transfer from side to side, which is a plus if you or your partner are restless sleepers. My partner and I tried a double size mattress and were pleased with how little movement travelled from one side to the other.

When getting in and out of bed here, I instantly appreciated how solid the edges of the mattress felt. The sides have a traditional stitched border and feel a lot more supportive than standard memory foam designs I’ve tried. Having good edge support makes it easier to get in and out of bed and more supportive when you sit on the side in the morning contemplating the day ahead.

ASPIRE ADVANCED TEMPERATURE CONTROL MATTRESS: VERDICT

Finding a mattress that offers two sides with high-tech fabrics to suit hot and cooler climes is quite the novelty and my overall experience of the Aspire design has been positive. While there’s no removable cover to make cleaning easier or extended sleep trial, I think that if you’re after a mindfully crafted mattress that is on the firmer side of medium, this is a great option. Not only does its thick structure feel nicely balanced, but the generous amount of pocket springs inside gives it that nice bit of bounce you don’t get on an all memory-foam design. I also really like the option of being able to flip it over to keep you cool in summer and cosy in winter.

Its materials including breathable wool and fabric infused with carbon fibre strands are mindfully sourced and the traditional stitched border does a great job at retaining the shape of the mattress over time. I found the individual pocket springs in the 4ft 6 double worked well to ensure movement was limited from one side to the other, but I’ve got my eye on the 6ft super king, which would give me even more room to stretch out.

ASPIRE ADVANCED TEMPERATURE CONTROL MATTRESS: ALTERNATIVES TO CONSIDER

While I haven’t discovered any mattresses that offer a hot and cool side like the Aspire, there are lots of thermos-regulating mattresses available that will keep you at the optimum temperature as you sleep. Mattresses such the Emma Hybrid Thermosync are designed to keep you cool in the warmer months, for example.
