The age of 5G is now upon us and T3 couldn't be more excited. Brand new, cutting edge 5G networks are being turned on the world over and, with the help of next-gen 5G phones, people are being empowered by their handsets like never before.
That's because 5G truly is a massive technological forward leap that will change the world, going beyond anything we've seen so far. From incredibly advanced AI and inter-device connectivity, to super low latency and high speed downloads and uploads, through cloud gaming and augmented reality, and onto pioneering, completely wireless virtual reality applications and much more, 5G is set to be the key that unlocks the next stage of mobile communication and experiences.
And, of all the new 5G handsets that are delivering these benefits, arguably the most innovative and pioneering of them all is the OPPO Reno 5G, which being available to order right now from EE on its brand new 5G network, holds the prestigious title as Europe's first commercialised 5G phone and a must-see device for all tech enthusiasts.
Indeed, ever since T3 reported live from Zurich at the device's launch, and got to go hands on to produce our hot take OPPO Reno 5G review, we've been amazed at not only OPPO's slick delivery of the 5G flagship (made possible thanks to the OPPO 5G Landing Project), with the maker reportedly preparing for its launch since 2015, but also just how well-engineered and powerful it is as a smartphone.
What follows are the key reasons why we couldn't be more excited about the OPPO Reno 5G flagship, which as you can see from the video above, not only delivers some of the most advanced phone hardware and features we've ever seen here at T3, but also enables its users to get the full benefits of 5G right now, straight out of the gate.
Going beyond the 4G limits of connectivity, the 5G OPPO Reno delivers blisteringly fast 5G connectivity by employing Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform, which comes with the futuristic X50 5G modem.
This hardware allows the handset to revolutionise the use of 4K and 8K video, be that by download, upload, or cloud-play, as well enable 3D video calling, 5G cloud gaming, in-store navigation, AR shopping and much more.
The speed of the Snapdragon 855 processor in partnership with the X50 not just delivers these 5G benefits but, in something that T3 is very keen to see, also helps take the AI capabilities within the Internet of Things era to a crazy-advanced new level.
OPPO's Breeno smart assistant, which launches later this year, therefore promises to be the ideal personal assistant for Reno 5G owners, with the AI capable of harnessing the immense power and speed of the handset's 5G network.
Here at T3 we love cutting-edge technology, which is why the awesome 5G capabilities of the OPPO Reno 5G excite us so much, however, we also love premium hardware and aesthetics. This is why of all the 5G phones we've gone hands on with so far, the Reno 5G has arguably impressed us most, with it in no way sacrificing looks, fit and finish and wider hardware package to be first to market.
For example, the Reno 5G's neatly engineered pivot-rising camera not only houses a super powerful camera system but also allows the phone's huge and drop-dead gorgeous 6.6-inch panoramic screen to be completely uninterrupted. Not only does this display look stunning, but makes watching content, browsing the internet and using the phone and its apps an incredibly enjoyable and immersive experience.
In terms of engineering, you simply have to hand it to OPPO when it comes round to the pivot-rising camera structure as not only has it been designed to work flawlessly for over five years of daily usage (far over the average lifetime of a smartphone), but protection of it has been put front and center, with a really cool drop protection mechanism capable of sensing in real time when the phone is in free-fall and thereby retracting the camera structure.
And, talking about the OPPO Reno 5G's pivot-rising system, it features one of the most amazing camera packages we've seen to date, with a 48MP rear camera and 16MP AI beauty front camera producing simply breathtaking images.
The primary lens, which is built on the powerful Sony IMX586 sensor, features 4-in-1 resolution focusing in low-light scenarios, a large F1.7 aperture, and laser detection auto focus. While the 16MP selfie camera rocks a F2.0 aperture and utilises a custom algorithm to correct light effects to adjust for every skin colour, making shots look very natural.
Arguably, though, the most impressive feature of the Reno 5G's camera system is its remarkable 10x Hyrbid Zoom. This feature uses a combination of the phone's 48MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 13MP telephoto lens to produce incredibly detailed long range shots. Check out the image below to see the results.
The Reno 5G's camera system also delivers what OPPO refer to as Ultra-Night Mode 2.0, which is a night time and low-light shooting mode that utilises AI, HDR, and multi-frame noise reduction to produce remarkably bright and sharp pictures.
The camera system's ability to record 4K video at 60 fps with optical image stabilisation is also impressive, as too its Audio Focus ability, which uses the Reno 5G's multiple microphones to record surrounding sounds from 360 degrees. And, thanks to the phone's stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, this 360-degree soundscape is directly enjoyable during playback on the device itself, too.
Of course, how the OPPO Reno 5G feels in the hand is also something we were very keen to find out and, after having used the phone, we were very happy to pass on that, in terms of design and fit and finish, it is without doubt the best phone the maker has ever produced.
From the luxe, dual contrast Ocean Green and Jet Black colourways, which deliver subtle eye-catching gradients, to the handset's adoption of Corning Gorilla glass on its backplate and and front screen, and through to its incorporation of OPPO's O-dot tech (a ceramic gem that gently lifts the phone when placed on a flat surface, thereby protecting its lenses from direct physical contact), the Reno 5G communicates premium at all times.
Rounding off this incredible 5G phone, the Reno 5G comes installed with a large 4,065 mAh battery which, here at T3, we were incredibly pleased to see. After all, 5G performance requires a serious battery to power it, and here the Chinese maker has ensured that users of the phone certainly won't be let down by lack of juice.
And, especially so considering the phone comes loaded with OPPO's VOOC flash charge 3.0 tech, which neatly can maintain high voltage during trickle charging and allow longer battery life cycles - something that is also aided by the Reno 5G running the all new, super-efficient, custom UI ColorOS 6, which is based on Android 9.0 Pie.
So, as you can see, right now we're incredibly enthused about the OPPO Reno 5G and, with EE's 5G network now live and the OPPO Reno 5G available to order now directly from the network, we're looking forward to bringing you our full T3 review in the very near future.
