The BBC has announced that it will now be streaming Blue Planet II in its entirety in 4K and HDR via the BBC iPlayer.
While the BBC already ran a demo of this UHD and HDR content on iPlayer, this is the first time we’ve had a full series. This uses the BBC HLG format and HEVC encoding to deliver the best possible quality at the lowest bitrate for easy streaming. It should also make way for this high quality streaming live in the near future. But for now what do you get?
This all means a wider colour gamut, better light and dark definition and higher resolution detail. But can you get it on your TV?
The BBC iPlayer app will be streaming the super high quality content which means it will only be available on certain TVs that support the format. It will also be available via Sky Q for those that subscribe to the platform.
You will also need a broadband line that supports speeds up to 22.7Mbps to get the full quality stream, although it will adapt to suit your limit and cut down resolution to suit.
